Phosphating – Electrofer 4 Phosphating |


The Phosphating is the creation of a layer of insoluble crystals such as Iron, Zinc, Manganese, Calcium or Nickel Phosphates (or a combination of several of them) on the surface of the steel through a series of chemical reactions occurring in acidic solution based on Phosphoric Acid. These may be neutral phosphate (PO4-3) or monoacids phosphates (HPO4-2).

This layer of insoluble crystals gives a small corrosion protection at low cost. It is usually used when the protection which is only intended for short periods such as transportation and storage until further operation. The protection can be increased by applying oil to the Phosphating layer. Phosphate crystals are very absorbent, retaining a significant amount of oil even after drying operations by temperature and/or centrifugation.

However, the main use of this treatment is as good adhesion basis of painting processes, vulcanizing or any other method of applying a coating layer whose adhesion depends solely on the roughness of the coated surface.

Phosphate crystals have appreciable size, varying according to the type of Phosphate formed, giving the coated surface a roughness to promote optimum grip with the added advantage of giving a slight protection in areas where the paint is scratched.
